The end of the 2021 season was controversial.
This post is going to be a little bit different. I am not going to recap the race; just talk through some thoughts I have.
First and foremost, a huge congratulations to Max Verstappen. Whether you are a fan of him or not, he drove very well all season and did deserve to win the championship. Now this is not to say that Lewis Hamilton didn’t deserve to win the championship. Honestly I would have been happy if either had one because they both worked really hard for it. Another congratulations to Mercedes for winning an eighth straight Constructors Championship. They continue to break their own records and I think that is really cool.
My personal opinion about the end of the race is that it should have been a red flag so no one could have complained, but I am not in charge of that decision. I have no idea what kind of pressure that is like or how to do a job like that. I am not trying to defend Michael Masi’s decision, because I don’t necessarily agree with it, but I am saying that it is really unfair for us to blame him for something we know nothing about.
Something that isn’t sitting right with me after the last race, is some “fan” reactions. Twitter was such a well for hate and criticism after the last race. Poor Nicholas Latifi was getting death threats for accidently crashing his car. I saw a post recently asking if people were excited for the upcoming season, and almost every comment was no. So many people are not going to watch F1 anymore because of what happened on the last lap. If that is your response, then I’m sorry to say you’re not actually a fan of the sport.
The 2021 season was thrilling and so full of ups and downs. The top three constructors were Mercedes in first, Red Bull in second, and Ferrari in third. The top three drivers were Max Verstappen in first, Lewis Hamilton in second, and Valtteri Bottas in third.
There are a lot of changes going into this upcoming 2022 season. The cars are going to be on a much more level playing field, and we are seeing a lot of moving around for the drivers. I can’t wait for racing to start up again tomorrow, and I am very much looking forward to another exciting season of racing.
